Implant Supported Dentures
Q & A
What are implant-supported dentures?
Expert cosmetic dentist Dr. Young offers state-of-the-art implant-supported dentures that are long-lasting. With implant-supported dentures, your dentures are supported by dental implants that are attached directly to your jawbone. This type of denture is ideal for adults who are missing teeth but still have enough bone in their jaw to support implants.
There are two types of implant-supported dentures:
- Bar-retained dentures for complete rows of teeth
- Ball-retained dentures for partial rows of teeth
The team of licensed denturists at Scott Young, DDS constructs all implant-supported dentures through the first class LVI lab. They have a good working relationship with the LVI dental lab and can get you what you need faster than any other office in the area.
Your denturist can monitor and alter the look and feel of your dentures to make sure you end up with a smile you're proud to show off.
From the initial consultation to the first implant-supported denture fitting, the skilled team utilizes the highest quality materials to deliver the best overall experience.
What is the procedure for implant-supported dentures?
Since implant-supported dentures are a permanent solution for missing teeth, and they become a custom-fitted part of your mouth, it takes a few appointments over the course of several months to complete the process. First, at your initial consultation, Dr. Young takes X-rays, makes impressions of your mouth, and may perform other diagnostic tests to determine your jawbone health and overall oral health.
Your first surgery involves placing the implants into your jawbone. Then you have to wait a few months for the implants to fuse to the bone. The team may also provide you with temporary dentures to wear while you undergo the procedure for implant-supported dentures.
Once your jaw has healed with the new implants, you receive a healing cap, or collar, on top of each implant until the collars can be replaced with regular abutments. The metal bar or balls attach to the abutments on the implants and the dentures attach to this foundation. At each visit, Dr. Young makes adjustments so that your dentures fit as comfortably as possible.
What are the advantages of implant-supported dentures?
Implant-supported dentures provide a number of advantages, including:
- Greater stability in your mouth than regular dentures
- Custom-fitting and comfortable
- Easier to talk and eat
- Aesthetically appealing and natural-looking
- No worries that your dentures will fall out of your mouth
Additionally, if you have upper implant-supported dentures, they can be made to cover less of the roof of your mouth than traditional dentures.
